In term of the finishing of preparations for the EU accession, the year 2003 was the most crucial for food enterprises. It related to deadlines of the harmonization of qualitative and production standards with the EU, hygienic and construction investments and also to the future existence of some food enterprises. Some meat producers resigned the keeping of slaughter-houses, they preferred the specialized meat production. In connection with accommodation to the EU standards, investment activities were strengthened and the procured investments increased. A decrease of economic performance was caused by the faster decrease of revenues in comparison with costs, along with the year-on-year increase of costs on revenues and with the decrease of production. Out of the total number of enterprises, profitable enterprises were predominant. Though, the share of loss-making enterprises was increased inter-annually at the expense of profitable enterprises.
