According to the 2002 census in Serbia there are approx. 780 000 small-sized and fragmented holdings. The share of family farms less than 3 ha accounts for 60% of the total number of holdings which are in the possession of 23.9% of the total arable land used. The share of the largest family farms (over 20 ha) accounts for 0.8% of the total number of farms which have 7.2% of the total arable land at their disposal. The objective was to analyze the ownership structure of family farms according to municipalities considering the importance of farm size on the overall development of agriculture and taking into consideration the heterogeinity of the economic development of municipalities and the fact that the share of family farms in the total number of farms with regard to size varies according to municipalities.
