Based on present Pinzgau cattle population structure the possible alternatives of actual breeding program were analysed with the aim to optimize them on expected genetic gain, generation interval length and increase of inbreeding. Presented were three alternatives: alternative 1 - proven sires breeding program alternative, 2 - MOET breeding program, alternative 3 - young sires breeding program with use of 70% young 30% of proven sires. Selection intensity significantly affected achieved results in all alternatives. With increased number of sires selected, genetic gain of milk yield decreased from 66.0 to 26.3 kg and fat and protein yield from 2.4 to 0.95 kg. Differences were observed in generation interval length between alternatives. Increased number of sires used in breeding caused decrease in inbreeding gain during generation interval in all three alternatives. MOET gives highest inbreeding because estimated breeding value is largely based on information coming from full-sibs, which increases co-selection of relatives. Proven sires breeding program resulted in the lowest genetic gain, long generation interval and lowest inbreeding. In young sires breeding program with use of 70% young and 30% of proven sires were used all available information sources of conventional breeding program: pedigree information, own performance of sires and dams and progeny information. This alternative resulted in genetic gain of 48% higher than proven sire breeding program and lower inbreeding than MOET breeding program.
