CN 72 A new mungbean cultivar

Ten thousand seeds of KPS 2 were irradiated with 600 grey of gamma ray. The selection procedure for the segregated materials in generation 2 to 4 was single descent method. Seeds from the third generation were planted under natural beanfly infestation to get rid of susceptible genotypes. At the fifth generation, individual plants were selected for yield trials in a sequence, preliminary, regional, farm and field trials. The preliminary trial conducted at Chiang Mai Field Crop Research Center in 1989 indicated that 10 plants of CNM-BFR 8709-5 was infested with 4 lavae and pupae, compared to 8.5 and 8.0 larvae and pupae for the susceptible cultivar, CN 36 and KPS2, respectively. Similarly, a field test carried out in farmers fields in 1995 suggested that the number of larvae and pupae infested 10 plants of CNM-BFR 8709-5 and CN 36 was 23.3 and 28.3 respectively. As a result, CNM-BFR 8709-5 is classifiled as a moderately resistant beanfly line, whereas CN 36 has susceptible to beanfly. Yield averaged over 29 locations of CNM-BFR 8709-5 was 4.4 percent greater than that of CN 36. In addition, CNM-BFR 8709-5 also showed more stability of yield and seed weight than CN 36 indicating that CNM-BFR 8709-5 can be grown in a wider range of environments. Mungbean is a crop under responsible work of Chai Nat Field Crops Research Center, and in 1999 is the year of the occasion of His Majesty the Kings six cycle of age or years old on 5th December 1999, therefore this line is to be named as CN 72.
