Vegetative behaviour of walnut plants (J. regia L.) in nursery, grafted by the methods patch budding, hot callus and hypocotyl grafting

The experiment was conducted in 20032004 at the Fruit Growing Institute, Plovdiv with the local cultivar Izvor 10, grafted on rootstock Juglans regia L. The purpose of the experiment was to establish the vegetative behaviour of the plants propagated by the methods patch budding, hot callus and hypocotyl grafting, grown in a nursery during the second year after their grafting. The different grafting methods defined the variants: I. Plants grafted by the patch budding method and grown two years in the nursery; II. Plants grafted by the patch budding method and grown in the nursery for two years but replanted during the second year; III. Plants grafted by the hot callus method and grown for one year in pots and planted the following year in the nursery and IV. Plants grafted by the hypocotyl grafting method and grown for one year in pots and planted the following year in the nursery. The data shown that the trees from var. I have the largest size. The trees from var. III and var. IV, which have been replanted from the pots in the nursery, do not reach the dimensions of the trees from var. I. Although that the var. II trees were also grafted by the patch budding method like the var. I trees, they have smaller size. These data show that replanting of the walnut trees depress their growth during the next year, regardless the grafting methods.
