The development of black currant was studied – its establishment as a crop variety creation and the role of variety investigation. The dynamic changes in variety structure is under renewing to the requirements of contemporary varieties – high content of vitamins and bio-active compounds suitability for machine harvesting high resistance to the main diseases and pests. Over 800 black currant varieties were created worldwide. Breeding activity is intensive in Russia and England now. New varieties possess complex genetic parentage and in high degree respond to the contemporary requirements. They are the base to build up a successful production. In Bulgaria black currant is one of the newer crops. During 60s and 70s was established as crop. The interest to it is renovated at the created new economical conditions. In replay new technologies for cultivation and the variety structure are created for specific soil and climatic conditions.
