Investigation on the determination of the concentration of HCO3- (carbonate ion) for preservation of high photochemical activity of chloroplasts in the conditions of water deficit was realized by the example of chloroplasts of wheat (Belorusskays 80 variety), rye (Radzima variety) and barley (Zazerskij 85 variety) in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus. Comparative influence of various concentrations of sodium bicarbonate on the photochemical activity of chloroplasts (photophosphorylation rate and Hill reaction rate) of studied crops was realized. Experiment results showed that HCO3- could fulfill the protective function in relation to chloroplast photochemical activity. It was suggested, that action of bicarbonate could be carried out by the direct influence on action of chloroplast electrontransport carriers as well as by the change of chloroplast membrane structures. That made it possible for a plant to maintain the effective activity of photosynthetic apparatus under intense water deficit conditions. The obtained results proved that energy-dependent regulation mechanisms played the essential role in the chloroplast maintenance in stress conditions
