The field reproductive performance of pigs after artificial insemination with semen frozen in static vapours of liquid nitrogen

The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of packaging forms (0.5 mL midi and 5 mL maxi straws) and two freezing methods of boar semen on reproductive performance of sows and gilts. The sows (n=75) and gilts (n=75) were inseminated either with frozen (experimental groups) or with liquid (control animals) semen. The semen was frozen by two different methods (A and B). Reproductive performances in sows inseminated with A or B frozen semen in 0.5 or 5 mL straws were as follows: farrowing rate: 80 and 67% vs. 80 and 67%, resp.; total litter size: 10.0 and 9.1 vs. 10.2 and 9.2 piglets, resp. The same variables in gilts were as follows: 73 and 67% vs. 67 and 60%, resp.; 9.1 and 8.3 (P less than 0.01) vs. 8.8 and 7.3, (P less than 0.01) resp. Control sows and gilts showed the following values: 93 and 93%; 12.6 and 10.7 (P less than 0.01), resp. There was a significant difference in total litter size between gilts inseminated with semen packed in maxi straws and frozen by the A or B method (8.3 vs. 7.3). In conclusion, frozen boar semen may give similar results as fresh semen. The litter size in gilts depended on the packaging volume.
