A research to study the inorganic salts substitution of MS medium with artificial foliar fertilizer, its effects on shoot and root growth of Cavendish banana explants in in vitro culture was done at Horticulture Seeds Center Installation or Balai Benih Induk Hortikultura at Salaman, Central Java. The aim of the research was to observe the explants response to artificial foliar fertilizer in order to substitute the inorganic salts of MS medium. Hyponek foliar fertilizer was applied as alternative source of inorganic salts. Treatments were arranged in completely randomized design, and the medium tested were complete MS medium and 1000 mg/l; 2000 mg/l; 3000 mg/l and 4000 mg/l of hyponek. The foliar fertilizer was applied into the MS medium minus inorganic salts. Explants were planted and incubated during multiplication phase for 4 weeks, and then transplanted to the new root growing medium for another 4 weeks. Growth of shoots and roots of explants were measured at the end of each phase. The results showed that growth response of explants planted on medium with foliar fertilizer during the multiplication phase was not significantly different to the explants planted on complete MS medium. Substitution of inorganic salts of MS medium with Hyponek 1000 mg/l was relatively beneficial since the effect of each treatment were the same. Meanwhile, the effect of Hyponek 1000 mg/l was almost the same with the effect of complete MS application during the root growing phase, and relatively better than the other Hyponek treatments.
