Effect of high Temperature Stress on Cool-Season Turfgrass Species

Cool season turfgrass species have been used throughout the world, however, their quality declines during the summer. Such a decline was suggested to be as a result of high temperature stress. This experiment was designed to select cultivars of main cool-season species for heat tolerance and determine the temperature in which each species start to show heat damages. Cultivars of each species were grown in pots filled with sand until full establishment. Pots were put in a controlled environmental growth chamber (24/15¨¬¬³ day/night) under 14/10 hours day/night photoperiod. After one week, temperature was increased 1¨¬¬³/24h there after until reached 50¨¬¬³. Survival rate of the cultivar was scored on a 0 to 100 (0=dead, 100=no stress symptoms) scale at 36/31, 38/33, 42/37, 44/39, 46/41, 48/43, and 50/45¨¬¬³. Initial heat injury occurred to perennial ryegrass at 36¨¬¬³ and others at 42¨¬¬³. Nugget and Bristol , pinnacle and allstar, and rebel Jr. and mesa were the most heat tolerant cultivars amony the kentucky blnegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue, respectively. The results suggested that tall fescue was the most heat tolerant species and perennial ryegrass was the least tolerant species among the tested species.
