In two separate experiments the effect of different concentrations of CuSO4 on rooting of Commelina communis L. cuttings, grown in sand and water was studied. In the first experiment, the concentrations were used including: 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 آµM of CuSO4 . Treatments added to the irrigation water. The second experiment, the used including: 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 آµM of CuSO4. Concentrations were added to the water. The experiments were carried out in complete randomizied design with four replication(each replicant consist one cutting with four nodes). Means were compared using LSD test (P 0.05). Results of the first experiment indicated all concentration used caused an increase length and number of main and lateral roots at two basal nodes, but only 8 آµM could cause significantly an increase in the number and length of main and lateral root in upper node and total root dry weight. The results of the 2 nd experiment indicated that increasing CuSO4 concentrations reduced main root length at all nodes, however CuSO4 at the rate of 4 and 8 آµM increased main root number when compared with control. Concentration of 4 and 6 آµM increased number and length of lateral roots at both upper and basal nodes, whereas 8 آµM acted only at the basal node. Initiation of lateral root branching did not occurred at the concentration of 0, 2 and 10 آµM of CuSO4 , however concentration of 6 and 8 آµM of CuSO4 increased secondary branching of lateral root at both nodes. No toxic effect of copper was observed in any of the concentration used. The results of the experiments indicated that copper sulfate can alter root initiation indexes in Commelina communis L. And because lack of information, it was recommended that the effect of copper be studied in other ornamentals, for the purpose of improving rooting of cuttings.
