Evaluation of new interspecific hybrids Limonium bonduelli x L. sinuatum [Liguria; Tuscany]

Inglés. [Limonium bonduelli is a Mediterranean species that could be utilised for commercial production. The traits to be improved are the variety of flower colours, the height and the strength of stems and the productivity. A breeding activity on L. bonduelli started in 1998 at the Experimental Institute for Floriculture in Sanremo and Pescia. A wild population of L. bonduelli and commercial varieties of statice (L. sinuatum) were cultivated in greenhouses, in open air and in vitro. The fertile and most interesting genotypes were utilized in a cross design. The first interspecific hybrids were selected in 2000. The genotypes of these three populations (hybrids L. bonduelli x L. sinuatum and selected progenies deriving from the parental genotypes) were evaluated in comparison with commercial varieties of L. sinuatum. The selected hybrids resulted to be characterized by a flowered stems production significantly higher than the other populations, a stem significantly shorter and harder than in L. bonduelli and a number of branches per stem significantly higher than in L. sinuatum and commercial varieties.]

Alcuni caratteri da migliorare, ai fini di un possibile utilizzo commerciale, sono l'aumento della gamma di colori del calice e della corolla, l'altezza e la robustezza dello stelo, la produttività. In questo lavoro vengono presentati i risultati delle prime valutazioni di ibridi interspecifici di L. bonduelli x L. sinuatum, selezionati nell'ambito di un programma di breeding svolto presso l'Istituto Sperimentale per la Floricoltura di Sanremo e Pescia. Queste nuove costituzioni presentano una vasta gamma di colori, stelo eretto e una buona resa produttiva
