As a part that accumulates basic findings on Kuchinoshima feral cattle, one of Japanese native cattle for the conservation and use of the rare and endangered animal genetic resources, the characteristics of musculature were investigated histometrically on typical muscles of each part of the body, and compared with those of Japanese black cattle and Holstein steer. The muscle fibers of Kuchinoshima feral cattle tended to be abundant in number and smaller in diameter in comparison with the other two strains, and those of the pelvic limb muscles to be larger in diameter than the thoracic limb. On the other hand, the proportion of the muscle fiber type showed a tendency to be higher in type II muscle fiber than other muscle fiber types; the diameter of the type II was also larger. It was evident that the musculature of Kuchinoshima feral cattle had the characteristics of tending to be high density of muscle fiber though the muscle fiber composition tended to be the same in the three breeds of cattle
