We have attempted to develop a new strain pig of Duroc breed from Duroc pigs imported from the USA since 1999. This experiment was to examine the reproductive ability in the fouth generation (G4), and growth and meat production ability in the fifth generation, (G5). 1) By non-likeness crossing between G4 on the basis of the breeding value of back fat thickness (BF), the next generation. G5 was produced. 2) Litter size in G4 was smaller than in the basal generation, 3) In G5, daily body weight gain was 1021+-l03g in males and 923+-86g in females, which was greater by 34g in males and by 22g in females than in G4. BF was 1.8+-0.3cm in males and 2.1+-0.4cm in females. There was a 0.2cm increase in BF for females above its G4 level but no change for males. 4) Crude lipid content of the longissimus muscle in G5 was 4.3+-1.6% across both sexes. 5) Total score for assessment of leg hoof shapes in G5 was 15.9+-4.3 in males and 17.5+-4.0 in females. In G5 selected to produce the next generation, the scores in males and females were 18.4+-2.7 and 18.5+-3.2, respectively.
