The issue and evolution of researches about integration in Japan
2007
Zhang, Q.(Graduate Univ. of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing (China)) | Saito, O.
The purpose of this paper is to clarify the issues and features of researches about vertical integration in Japan, and to predict the future research of integration. The result shows that researches about vertical integration have two periods. The 1st period is 1960s-1970s. Many agricultural economists have studied vertical integration in view of Marxist economics. The 2nd period is after 1980s. There are some researchers studied the structure conversion of vertical integration with the theory of industrial organization, transaction cost and management in the pork industry in United States. But about domestic vertical integration there are few studies. Zhang and Saito studied domestic vertical integration in the poultry industry from view of a new aspect of strategic choice in strategic management. There is a prediction that vertical integration will expand in food system, not only in poultry industry, but also in other livestock industries, because consumers require it (processed food, high quality and safety food, etc.). As above we need a comprehensive approach about vertical integration in other industries in varied approaches.
