The effects of tree height and growth on the density of feeding sites of the cypress bark moth Epinotia granitalis (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in a young Japanese red cedar [Cryptomeria japonica] plantation

The author examined the effects of tree height and growth on the density of larval feeding sites of the cypress bark moth Epinotia granitalis, which causes wood discoloration in conifer plantations in Japan. The height and annual growth of trees were investigated in relation to the number of feeding sites of E. granitalis in a young stand of Japanese red cedar Cryptomeria japonica before its canopy closed. Tree height significantly correlated with the number of feeding sites of E. granitalis in four of the six study years. The correlation coefficient in each year increased with the increase of feeding sites per tree, suggesting that more larvae feed on higher tree with much amount of canopy foliage in years when there are many larvae. On the other hand, the annual growth of trees was significantly correlated with the number of feeding sites only in one of the six study years.
