The effect of methionine on the root activity and its mechanism were studied with emphasis on the healthy seedling growth in young tea plants. In general, a high linear correlation can be observed between the methionine and ethylene concentration. Ethylene production was promoted by addition of methionine, and increased the root weight in young tea plants, with resultant enhancement of root activity, chlorophyll, and free amino acid content. Controlled availability nitrogen fertilizer including methionine is recommended for the increase of root development which leads to the healthy seedling growth in young tea plants.
