Although in Latvia there are not problems with a drinking water accessibility and adequacy, it quality not always is good and sometimes even not correspond to regulations of the health harmlessness. Cause of problem usually is obsolete water supply system - water pipes have been corroded, and often are cracking. In Latvia, for centralised water supply mostly has been used ground water, which quality in comparison is good, however in many places the problem is increased content of iron. Wastewater collection and purification in many places have been carried out with moral and physical obsolete equipment. For situation improving, Latvian Environmental Protection Fund every year announced competition for financing of environmental projects in the field of water protection. For improving water management infrastructure LEPF financing is 700 thousand Lats in 2007.
