The aims of the research in agricultural sector today and in the future are: to create larger diverse of high quality food products, using progressive primary processing technologies of products, to provide supply of rational and healthy nutrition, to decrease risk of food borne diseases, to promote biological safety, strongly to observe animal good welfare principles and bioethics, sustainable development of rural and social environment, to develop bioeconomics and to provide conservation of biological diversity, as well as to keep up increase of labour efficiency in obtaining of agricultural produce.

Pētījumu mērķi nozarē šobrīd un nākotnē ir: radīt lielāku augstas kvalitātes pārtikas produktu dažādību, izmantojot modernas primārās produkcijas pārstrādes tehnoloģijas, nodrošināt racionāla un veselīga uzturu piedāvājumu, samazināt ar pārtiku saistītu slimību risku, veicināt bioloģisko drošumu, stingri ievērot dzīvnieku labturības principus un bioētiku, lauku dabas un sociālās vides ilgtspējīgu attīstību, attīstīt bioekonomiku un nodrošināt bioloģiskās daudzveidības saglabāšanu, kā arī uzturēt darba ražīguma pieaugumu lauksaimniecības produkcijas ieguvē.
