The quality of mineral nutrition is one of the most important factors affecting plant processes. The grain yield and especially quality are dependent on the available nitrogen content and the plants possibility to use it. In winter wheat, especially the plants response to plant nutrients is different according the growing season. The intention of the research is to explain nitrogen content changes in different winter wheat varieties and in the process of plant yield and quality formation. The research studied the nitrogen uptake process in parts of the wheat plant and in soil vegetative growth. The studies were conducted as a field trial at the Training and Research Farm Peterlauki of the Latvia University of Agriculture for three years on sod-calcareous medium loam. There were four winter wheat varieties with different nitrogen applications. The material for nitrogen analyses in the above ground plant parts were collected at the Zadoks Growth Stage (ZGS) 32, 51, 69 and 91, and the soil samples at 0-20. 20-40, 40-60 cm depth layers were collected at the sometime. The concentration of nitrogen increased till the shooting into the ears stage and it depends on the type of mineral fertilizer and from the variety duration vegetative period. The relation of the mineral nitrogen content in the whole plant has a high correlation with grain yield in ZGS 51 for medium intensive varieties. The relation of the mineral nitrogen content in the soil has a high negative correlation with grain yield. A close correlation was found in the distribution of nitrogen concentration in leaves and stems and nitrogen application, but it depends on the varieties and the plant growth stages.
