Population processes and policies
2008
Eglite, P. (issue ed.), Latvian Academy of Sciences, Riga (Latvia). Inst. of Economics
This issue is devoted to specifics of population replacement and migration which were influenced by political events and decisions; this is a matter that causes concerns about the present demographic situation and its possible development that are greater in Latvia than in the majority of other European countries. In Latvia, the birth rate is one of the lowest, and life expectancy is the lowest in the EU; migration facilitates the decrease of population and thus minimises the return from investment in demography. For two successive decades, there has been a decrease in population instead of an increase. Each article in this issue is devoted to the impact of political processes on certain kind of migration, as well as the national population policy and relevant measures for improving the existing situation.
