A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of Azospirillum in promoting growth of rice in three soil orders of Nueva Ecija, namely; Vertisol, Ultisol and Inceptisol. The experiment was laid-out in a 3x4 Split-Plot, in a Randomized Complete Block Design with the three soil orders as the main plot and inoculation as the subplot. The treatments were as follows: T1 - unfertilized plants without inoculation, T2 - inoculation of isolated Azospirillum, T3 - inoculation of Azospirillum obtained from PhilRice and T4 - 120-60-30 kg N-P2O5-K2O/ha. Inceptisol inoculation with the isolated Azospirillum in a prepared substrate increased the population of Azospirillum to the desired level of 1x105 cell/gram of dry soil but not in Vertisol and Ultisol. The isolated Azospirillum in a prepared substrate had obtained significant increase in agronomic parameters such as plant height, shoot-root ratio, number of panicles, length of panicles and grain yield of rice with the uninoculated and unfertilized plants, and comparable with fertilized plants with 120-60-30 kg N-P2O5-K2O/ha. Application of inorganic fertilizer registered the highest N-uptake in all the soils used.
