Movement of larvae of the Asian corn borer (ACB), Ostrinia furnacalis Guenee, was investigated using BT corn YG818 and its isohybrid ORD 818 as the non-Bt host planted in adjacent field plots. Dry and wet season trials were conducted for this study from Feb 2005 to Apr 2005 and July 2005 to Sept 2005, respectively. Larval movement was determined using the distance between adjacent Bt and non-Bt plots as treatments: Treatment 1 with 1.50 m, Treatment 2 with 0.75 m and Treatment 3 with 0.50 m. The ACB larvae were observed to transfer from the Bt to the non-Bt host only in Treatment 3 in both dry and wet seasons. Observed larval transfer was higher during the wet season than in the dry season. The effect of inter-plot distance on damage by the ACB larvae to the Bt host plant was also evaluated by counting the holes or tunnels in the stalk. Results showed that damage caused by borer larva is inversely related to the distance between adjacent Bt and non-Bt plots: the lesser the distance, the greater the damage.
