In vitro-grown plantlets (somaclones) was developed from the leaves of sugarcane cultivars SPF-234 that is susceptible to red rot (Colletotrichum falcatum). Callus derivatives, 258 in number, were transplanted in the field along with the parent and evaluated using plug method. 19 somaclones were found resistant to red rot. Data for characters like cane height, cane number, cane thickness, cane weight, brix %age and yield/plant were recorded. Above mentioned parameters were estimated for the presence of variability. Coefficient of variability of the regenerated population ranged between 4.10% to 26.21 % compare to parental value 0.98 to 11.02. There was increase over the parent in all the characters except cane weight and brix percentage. Maximum increase was recorded in number of tiller (28.55) followed by yield with value 18.81.
