A field trial was conducted to investigate the influence of plant populations (67000, 83000 and 111000 plants ha-1) on the quantitative and qualitative performance of three sugar beet cultivars (Kaweterma, KWS-1451. and Aura) during 2003-2004 at Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam, Pakistan. Results showed that all growth, beetroot yield and quality parameters were significantly (P less than 0.01) influenced by plant populations in all three varieties. Among plant populations, 83,000 or 111000 plant ha-1 showed significantly promising results regarding beetroot yield and sugar content as compared to 67,000 plants ha-1. Thus, the plant population of 83,000 plants ha-1 was considered optimum. While, in varieties, Kaweterma remained superior over KWS 1451 and Aura both in quantitative (beet root yield) as well as qualitative (brix and sugar recovery) performance. Under optimum plant population (83,000 plants ha-1), the crop grew longer (54.90 cm), with more number of leaves (18.99), better beet root yield (84.357 t ha-1), higher brix (18.25%) and recovery (10.24 %), while vertical diameter (25.63 cm), horizontal diameter (16.17 m) and single beet root weight (4.20 kg) were greater under lower plant population of 67,000 plants ha-1, mainly due to more space available for each plant to receive greater quantities of moisture and nutrients, while higher yields under 83,000 plants ha-1 were associated with proper number of plants per unit area. It was concluded that sugar beet cultivars Kaweterma may be planted under plant population of 83,000 plants ha-1 for obtaining maximum performance under soil and climatic conditions of Tandojam.
