Diversity of algal flora in Rumli Stream, Islamabad was investigated. One hundred two algal species were recorded from the stream in the vicinity of Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad during 2005. They were taxonomically found to belong to 60 genera, 33 families, 16 orders, 12 classes, 8 phyla and 3 kingdoms. The phylum Cyanophyta was represented by 37 species of 16 genera (36.31%), Volvocophyta by 30 species of 17 genera (29.45%), Euglenophyta by 3 species of 2 genera (2.9%), Chrysophyta by 1 species of 1 genus (0.98%), Bacillariophyta by 18 species of 13 genera (17.6%), Xanthophyta by 1 species of 1 genus (0.98%), Chlorophyta by 11 species of 9 genera (10.7%) and Charophyta by 1 species of 1 genus (0.98%). The algal species of Cyanophyta were found to be the most dominant and the next prevalent species were of the phylum Volvocophyta. Minimum numbers of species were found in Euglenophyta, Chrysophyta, Xanthophyta and Charophyta. The collecte d database will help to record future changes in the diversity of algal flora in Rumli Stream due to growing inventory of domestic sewage and agricultural run off in the stream in response to changing pollution levels in the stream from rising population, recreational activities, and land-use practices around the stream.
