Screening of wheat genotypes for resistance against cereal aphids

Twenty wheat genotypes were assessed against the natural populations of three most prevalent species of aphids. The pest species included Rhopalosiphum pack, Sitobion avenae and Schizaphis graminum. The experiment included wheat genotypes comprising; Suliman-96, RT-5, Khaniwal, K2-L, Takbeer, Nowshera-96, PS-85, Blue Silver, KRL1-4, Ghaznawi-98, Bakhtawar-92, Kirn, Fakhr-e-Sarhad, Dera-98, Saleem-2000, ICARDA, SARC-3, RT-10, Tatara-98 and Inqilab. The seasonal occurrence and the peak populations of pests though varied from Near to year still remained at the mercy of climatic changes and/or parasitoids. Maximum infestation was recorded in genotype Khaniwal and the lowest average was recorded on Tatara-98. Other genotypes exhibited a mixed response. Almost all species of aphids appeared in the first week of January and persisted till the start of April. In the present scenario, cereal aphids do not pose a threat to the wheat crops in NWFP; howev er, Rhopalosiphum path could become a serious pest of early grown wheat varieties or those that are intercropped in prunes orchards. Resistance does exist in the currently available wheat genotypes. Tatara-98 has shown its resistance to the cereal aphids its genetic basis of resistance and mode of inheritance need to be investigated.
