Detection of Brucella abortus specific antibodies from the sera of cattle and buffaloes

A study was carried out to detect Brucella abortus specific antibodies from the sera of cattle and buffaloes. A total of 100 blood samples from each aborted cattle and buffalo were collected and examined by Rose Bengal Plate and Serum Agglutination techniques of 100 blood samples tested, the prevalence of Brucella abortus specific antibodies were detected from the sera of 31% cattle and 47% buffaloes. The highest prevalence of specific antibodies recorded in non pregnant (80.65% cattle and 93.62% buffaloes) as compared to pregnant (6% cattle and 3% buffaloes). Prevalence of positive reactors was dominated in age group of greater than 4 years (87.10%) in cattle and greater than 5 years (95.74%) in buffaloes, respectively. A relatively higher Brucella abortus antibody titer (1/160) determined by Serum Agglutination Test (SAT) was found in buffaloes 12(25.53%) than 1/80 in cattle 6(19.35%).
