From 100 samples 130 algal species belonging to 59 genera of six phyla were collected from paddy fields and water course in Sharqpur, Kamalia (Pakistan) during 2006. Among them 48 species (37 %) of 18 genera were recorded from the phylum Cyanophyta, 38 species (29.2 %) of 17 genera from the phylum Volvocophyta, 7 species (5.4 %) of 2 genera from the phylum Euglenophyta, 27 species (20.8 %) of 15 genera from the phylum Bacillariophyta, 8 species (6.2 %) of 6 genera from the phylum Chlorophyta and 2 species (1.5 %) of one genus from the phylum Charophyta. Species of the phylum Cyanophyta were found to be most dominant and the next prevalent phylum was Volvocophyta. Minimum number of species was observed in the phylum Charophyta. The purpose of this study was to obtain basic information about algal floristics in the paddy fields and their watercourses.
