Effect of time on population variation of rhizobacterial strains in the rhizosphere of wilt affected chickpea plants

Population variation of two rhizobacterial strains was observed during six-month period. These strains were isolated from rhizosphere of chickpea plants affected with wilt disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. ciceris. Two colors of rhizobacterial strains were consistently found. One strain formed white colored colonies with irregular shape and the other formed yellow colored colonies with round shape. White colored strain highly dominated than yellow colored strain in terms of number of colonies. The maximum numbers of white and yellow colonies were obtained in the month of March. The best interaction between time and soil solution concentration for the total number of colonies and white colonies was found in month of March and soil solution concentration of 10(2) ml. Similarly, the best interaction between time and soil solution concentration for the number of yellow colonies was found in month of March and soil solution concentration of 10(5) ml. The greater effect of root on bacterial population is a result of greater ability of bacteria to quickly colonize roots and most effectively utilize root exudates. White colonies (Pseudomonas fluorescens) populations showed the largest increase through out this study, both due to soil differences and root influence.
