Effect of fungi on germination of forest tree and their chemical control

Forest and shade trees seed samples, naturally infected with seed-borne fungi showed poor germination in all the samples except few one such as Suckchain, Pine and Eucalyptus. Isolation of various fungi from different parts of abnormal seedlings showed that seed-borne fungi were the major cause of low germination. For control of isolated seed-borne fungi, three recommended fungicides such as Benlate, Dithane M-45 and Captan were used @ 2, 3 and 4 g per kg of seed. Although, all the fungicides reduced the number of pathogens and their incidence but Benlate proved to be the best fungicide that controlled the seed-borne fungi @ 3g/kg, seeds of forest. It is concluded that forest seed should be tested and treated before sowing to check the primary infection of seed-borne fungi for growing of healthy forest plantation for friendly environment.
