Response of sunflower to Glomus epigaeum and G. Pubescens inoculation

A pot study was undertaken to investigate the effect of inoculation of two arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) species viz. Glomus epigaeum (Dainels and Trappe) and G. pubescens (Sacs. and Ell.) on the root colonization and shoot dry weights of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cv. Hysun-33. Inoculation with G. epigaeum exhibited significant effect on shoot dry biomass of sunflower. There was 51% increase in dry biomass due to G. epigaeum as compared to control, 66 days after sowing. G. epigaeum was also found to be superior to G. pubescens in root colonization potential. There was 11 and 3% root colonization due to G. epigaeum and G. pubescens inoculation, respectively. Similarly there were 7 fungal entry points per cm of root length in G. epigaeum as compared to only 3 in G. pubescens inoculated plants.
