Cytochrome oxidase from a number of eucaryotic organisms has been isolated and thoroughly investigated in various laboratories. Golden duck cytochrome oxidase from heart mitochondria was isolated for the first time in these Laboratories and investigated in view of its structural and functional properties. Spectral properties of golden duck oxidase were found to be similar to that of beef oxidase as standard. Both oxidases possess Cu and Fe atoms. Sedimentation equilibrium (S) values indicated golden duck heart cytochrome oxidase as 10 S and beef oxidase as 11 S at physiological pH. Polypeptide composition of golden duck oxidase has seven sub units.
