Content of dry matter, crude fibre, crude protein and quality of whole-plant corn silages made from 1955-2003

Samples of maize-whole plant silage (3891 samples) taken from the whole area of Poland were analysed in the period 1955-2003. Contents of dry matter, crude fibre, as well as lactic, acetic and butyric acids were determined. The quality of silage was rated according to the Flieg-Zimmer scores. All analysed lots were scored as good or very good. No butyric acid was found. The average content of dry matter amounted to 20.9 percent, and ranged from 13.1 to 31.8 percent. Crude protein content in dry matter amounted to 11.3 percent. The content of crude fibre in dry matter was ranging from 18.1 to 38.2 percent
