Azospirillum spp. strains of bacteria were isolated from the endorhizosphere of maize (Zea mays) cultivated on different soils. These strains were able to degrade the straw. Nitrogen fixation of Azospirillum spp. strains (starved) determined, as reduction of C2H2, was demonstrated in N-free medium with straw as the sole carbon source and in alluvial soil medium with straw over a time of 168 hours. The highest nitrogenase activity of Azospirillum spp. in N-free medium with straw as the sole carbon source was found after 24 h for 72 h. These ranged from 250 nM to 1000 nM C2H4/h x cube cm of gas phase. The highest ecethylene reduction of Azospirillum spp. in alluvial soil medium with straw was found after 168 hours: 68.2 nM C2H4/h x cube cm of gas phase
