The evolving role of genebanks in the fast-developing field of molecular genetics
2004
de Vicente, M.C. (International Plant Genetic Resources Institute, Rome (Italy). Genetic Resources Science and Technology) (ed.)
This publication is a product of three days of discussion held with genebank curators, breeders, molecular biologists and geneticists during an expert consultation meeting in November 2002 in Leon, Spain. An outline of the main topics (Molecular technologies for managing and using genebank collections; Genebank management and the potential role of molecular genetics to improve the use of conserved genetic diversity; Plant genetic resources: benefits and implications of using molecular markers; Connecting plant germplasm collection and genomic centres; and capacity-building and training; and recommendations that had arisen in the meetings discussions are put together. Significant issues that developed as a result of introducing molecular technologies into the fields of germplasm and genebank management are examined to determine the future strategies and activities of these disciplines
