There are given the results of bacteriological monitoring of bream which is the main fishery object of the Couronian Lagoon. The studies of 2000, 2001 and 2005 involved quantitative and qualitative analysis of the lagoon water microflora, as well as fish – clinically healthy and with cutaneous ulcers. In the water bacteriocenosis predominating were bacteria of the Coli bacillus group – 36%, Aeronomas – 20%, Bacillus – 15%, Staphylococcus – 14%, Micrococcus – 14% and some others. The species composition of cutaneous microflora of clinically healthy fish was similar to that of the unaffected cutaneous regions of morbid bream and related to water bacteriocenosis. However, the quantitative composition was greatly different. So, in breams with cutaneous ulcers predominating were conventionally pathogenic bacteria (74%), in clinically healthy fish – saprophytes (51%), with the total number of mesophilous aerobic and optionally aerobic microorganisms (MAOAM)– 4.0>104 and 2.0>103 CFU, respectively. In the wound content of ulcers there were detected Aeromonas hydrophilia (1.0 >103-2.6>104 CFU), Proteus vulgaris and Proteus mirabilis (8.0>102 CFU). Bacterial content of muscular tissue, blood and internal organs was 1.1>105 CFU/g, 2.0>101-5.0>2 CFU, respectively. 68% of strains of conventionally pathogenic bacteria isolated from fish with cutaneous ulcers had high hemolytic activity, 74% - proteolytic and 80% Aeromonas – DNAase. The estimation of biological indices of quality and safety of the Couronian Lagoon bream has shown that trunks of clinically healthy fish fully met the requirements to fresh fish, the bream with cutaneous ulcers according to the number of MAOAM and the presence of bacteria of the Coli bacillus group was uneatable. It is recommended for feeding animals after preliminary decontamination by boiling.
