During 2005 and 2006, growth of various categories of Idared apple fruit after carbaryl application (0.3% Carbaryl S-50) was investigated. Carbaryl was applied at the 8-10 mm stage of central fruits development. Fruit diameter was measured every 2 days, during period of 16 days (total of 9 measurements), with the first measurement begin made just before the Carbaryl application. During the period of measuring, the average growth of fruits that will persist to harvest was 0.5-1 mm per day. The growth of central fruits was more intensive than the growth of lateral ones. Three days after Carbaryl application, growth of fruit that will abscise started to slow down noticeably, and 10-14 days after Carbaryl application it stopped completely. Another 4-10 days passed from the moment of growth cessation until fruit dropping. This investigation has confirmed that fruit growth measurement can serve as a reliable method for the early prediction of Carbaryl thinning effect on apple fruits.
