We studied the red blood cell parameters of fallow deer in Slovenia and determined their mean haematological values based on the sex, age and location of the animals. The samples were taken in wintertime from two hunting enclosures in Upper Carniola (Gorenjska) and Lower Carniola (Dolenjska). The mean values ± standard deviations of the samples (n = 52) were: number of erythrocytes (RBC) 10.02 ± 2.03 × 1012/L, haemoglobin concentration (Hb) 146.2 ± 31.2 g/L, haematocrit value (PCV) 0.425 ± 0.09 L/L, mean cell volume (MCV) 43.2 ± 5.7 fl, mean cell haemoglobin (MCH) 14.7 ± 1.8 pg and the mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) 347 ± 44 g/L. The animals younger than 2 years old had significantly lower MCV, and significantly higher MCHC values than the animals older than two years old. The research also showed that in comparison with the animals from Lower Carniola the fallow deer from Upper Carniola had significantly higher average PCV and MCV values and a lower MCHC value. These findings should provide a useful reference base for monitoring the health of fallow deer in Slovenia.
