The data from pig performance testing and genetic evaluation of the Large White breed in Slovak pig breeding program were used to analyze genetic improvement of litter size traits from 1993 to 2003. The 7-trait animal model implemented in routine genetic evaluation in Slovakia since January 2000 was used to estimate the breeding values of animals. Genetic trends for the litter size (number of piglets born alive in the 1st litter and number of piglets born alive in the 2nd and later litters) and total breeding value (aggregate genotype in Slovak crowns) has been analyzed. Genetic trends were estimated as the average breeding values within the years of birth separately for performance tested males and females. Continuous genetic improvement for all traits under study was observed since 1993. Higher genetic improvement and differentiation of genetic level for male and female population was estimated for animals born since 1998. Cumulative genetic improvement for litter size traits from 1993 to 1997 was very small (1st litter: +0,09 and +0,11; 2nd and later litters: +0.09 and +0.08 piglet per litter for male and female population, respectively), while significantly higher genetic gain since 1997 was determined (1st litter: 0.29 and 0.20; 2nd and later litters:0.38 and 0.25 piglets per litter). These findings support the assumption of positive influence of introducing BLUP and animal model in the routine genetic evaluation, especially for traits with low heritabilities. The analysis of active population of boars in May 2003 is also given. Comparison of genetic improvement in other pig populations and experimental studies is given in the article.
