Molecular markers are molecules, which could be used to trace a desired gene or genes in examined genotypes. In fact, a piece of DNA or a protein can be used as a marker. The various categories of markers differ for several attributes: level of polymorphism, degree of environmental stability, number of loci, and molecular basis of the polymorphism. Earlier approaches were based on the evaluation of storage proteins or isozymes. DNA markers seem to be the best candidates for efficient evaluation and selection of plant material. Molecular markers can be used for identification of cultivars, for taxonomic, phylogenetic and genetic diversity analyses. A set of 50 RAPD markers, three ISSR markers and AFLP markers were used for genotyping of twelve flax cultivars.
