Natural recombinant Plum pox virus (PPV) isolates were detected in Albania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Serbia and Slovakia. Despite different geographical origin and temporal distinction of their isolation (1993-2003), all the recombinant isolates were closely related, showed the identical position of recombination breakpoint at the end of the Nib gene and shared typical signature in their N-terminal CP sequence. Based on present knowledge about spatial and temporal genetic stability of natural PPV recombinant isolates identified to date, their close relationship and their wide geographic distribution, recombinant isolates should therefore be classified as members of the unique PPV subgroup, PPV-Rec.
