2005
Buchta, S.(Vyskumny ustav ekonomiky polnohospodarstva a potravinarstva, Bratislava (Slovak Republic))
The contribution deals with the analysis of rural employment and the phenomenon of subsistence farms in Slovakia. The sudden fall of agrarian employment was consequently expressed through displacement of this social group of inhabitants to unemployment registration. On the present, the unemployment in the Slovak economy could be characterized by the fragmentized work career combined with working and social incomes. A new-arose group of agricultural seasonal workers is not eligible for the unemployment compensation and the social insurance in the period of its unemployment. The phenomenon of subsistence farms has been highly widen. It responds to the reduced purchase force of rural inhabitants. It negates an income deprivation of rural households to a certain extent. The highest concentration of subsistence farms was localized to some space aggregations (in which a dominant employer was discharged), infra-structurally unfavorable regions etc. The increased formation of subsistence farms creates a social buffer of vulnerable groups of rural population. It admittedly responds to their decreased living standard (namely older persons) and it shares in the creation of subjective defense mechanisms eventually of a delaying strategy of searching for alternative means of subsistence.
