Soil organic matter - basic indicator for soil ecological functions assessment
2006
Barancikova, G.
Soil organic matter (SOM) is basic indicator, which influence various soil functions. On Soil Science and Conservation Research Institute evaluation of soil functions several years are solved. Among this, filtration/transportation and transformation of organic contaminants are also worked out. Among basic indicators at inactivation of organic xenobiotics in soil system also soil organic matter is participated. The most important mechanism of organic contaminants retention is soil sorption, which can be realized on mineral and organic components. However SOM plays the most important role in sorption and accumulation phase of organic xenobiotics. Org. contaminants sorption is influenced also by quality of SOM and humic substances with aromatic structures are dominanting sorbing fraction. Quality of these substances can be expressed by optical parameter Q4,6. Influence of SOM on filtration of organic xenobiotic can be described by organic carbon content (COrg) as quantitative and Q4,6 as qualitative parameter. These SOM parameters are also involving in evaluation of organic contaminants tranformation.
