Selected physical properties of mature and juvenile spruce wood from the viewpoint of cooking pulps
2004

This paper was focused on the estimation of differences in the selected physical properties of mature and juvenile spruce wood, and on their influence on the course of chemical pulping. The compared samples much differed in their axial permeability at a moisture content above FSP (medium - water), and in dry state (medium - air), as well. The microscopy of macerates of disintegrated samples hints at marked differences in the fibres dimensions of mature and juvenile spruce wood. The compared samples exhibited differences in their chemical composition (contents of cellulose, holocellulose and lignin). Juvenile wood contained higher portion of lignin and markedly lower portion of cellulose. Different properties of juvenile and mature spruce wood may influence the contents of rejects in prepared pulps, and their strength properties, as well.
