Collection of woody species in Borova Hora Arboretum and its development during 40 years
2005
Skvareninova, J.
The collection of autochthonous woody species and sorts, populations of some commercial tree species, protected and endangered species is located in Borova hora Arboretum of Technical University of Zvolen. The largest complement of the collection on precious species and sorts from Slovakian forests was done in 1976-1985. Selection was enlarged by 149 species and 198 sorts of coniferous species and by 403 species and 185 sorts of deciduous species from natural localities. Information on each of taxons is possible to obtain in evidence database system according to evidence number, species-sort, stand and orographic unit. Many factors strongly influence health state and cause damage of plantings in last years. Heavy snow cover has harmed more than 60 woody plants from 2002, most of all Pinus sylvestris and its sorts. Dry periods during vegetation season caused death of more than 200 woody plants, especially of Picea abies and Fagus sylvatica sorts. In present there are 4 048 evidence units which include 118 genera, 455 species and 933 sorts of coniferous and deciduous woody plants in the arboretum. They are used for education of dendrology and to stress their colour and habitual contrasts.
