The biological and ecinomic qualities of the hybrid Knezha 689W - late maize for grain, are presented. The hybrid was created in the Maize Research Institute - Knezha by the method of heterosis selection. It is representative of the hybrids with special qualities. In the food processing industry white maize is used for producion of fine bread stuffs, and the population all together use it for making boiled maize, hominy and other meals. Due to the absence of white maize hybrids up to now, use was made of local varieties, different for the separate regions of the country. By the same reason after creating of the hybrid it was compared with forage maize hybrids. In the experimentally field of the Institute on three years average Knezha 689W exeeded the standard H 708 with 8.4%. In preliminarity test average for conditions with and without irigation the yield was with 7.9% more than this of the standard. In regular 2 year testing Knezha 689W presented yield equal with the standard. The moisture content in the harvesting time was 2% more than that of the standard, which is characteristic of white maize. Under field conditions Knezha 689 is practically resistanst to the economically important diseases. Knezha 689W possesses good resistance to lodging. The appearance of hybrids with white grain will make up for a deficiency appearing after displacement of local varieties by hybrids with yellow grain.
