Sixty laying Japanese quails were divided into 3 groups (1 control and 2 experimental) of 20 animals each in order to study the effect of chromium and cadmium administration on the quality of their eggs. The Cr group was administered 0.12 mg Cr/day per quail in drinking water, whereas the Cd-Cr group was given a combination of 0.12 mg Cd and 0.12 mg Cr/day and bird. Cd distribution in eggs, egg mass, and the strength and thickness of shells were determined after 35 and 58 days of administration. Cr addition had a positive effect on the weight of eggs. A significant decrease of eggshell strength and thickness was found in the Cd-Cr group in comparison with both the Cr and control group. The content of Cd was significantly lower in eggshells and egg yolks in the Cr group in comparison with both the Cd-Cr and control group. The data show that Cr addition can improve the quality of quail eggs and eliminate the negative effect of Cd.
