Preliminary study on the efficiency of different beehives
2000

An efficiency study involving eight different types of hive were used; among which five of them were the movable frame hive, namely; Zander, langstroth, Fom, Dadant and Modified Zander; and two types of intermediate top bar hives (Kenyan and mud block hives) and one type of traditional basket hives was conducted at Holetta Bee Research Center. During the study period, the honey and wax yield, the internal hive temperature, colony weight, absconding and swarming rate of the colony and other related parameters were recorded. Accordingly, there is significant mean (p0.05) difference between the groups in the honey yield, internal hive temperature, hive the moveable frame hives it was observed that there is no significant mean differences among them. On the other hand, no significant (p0.05) mean differences is observed between the intimidate hives in the wax yield computed. The over all mean of traditional basket hives is observed to be less than the rest of the hive and significantly different. Difference in year effect did not reach statistically significant level (p0.05) Relatively highest pure honey yield was recorded by the Zander type of hive followed by langstroth hive with the average yield of 12.24 and 11.56 kg per hive per year respectively. The average internal temperature in each hive is relatively closer to the normal colony (brood temperature), though certain fluctuations appeared with in the eight groups of hive types, the zander type was observed to be better than the others in the over all mean values. On the other hand, it was found that there is significant (p0.005) differences between the traditional basket hive and those improved (moveable frame and comb) hives.
