Effect of type of cutting and media mixture on rooting ability of Arabica coffee hybrid.

Hybrid coffee varieties can be multiplied true-to type only through hand pollination, rooting of cuttings or tissue culture. In the present study, rooting of cuttings was investigated using a factorial combination of randomized complete block design (RCBD) in three replications. The study was conducted over two years. The results of the analysis of variance revealed highly significant difference (P0.01) between soil media mixtures and between cutting types for all the characters measured except root length for which differences among media were non significant. The interaction effects between cutting and media were non-significant (p0.05) for all the characters except shoot length. Among cutting types, soft wood showed significantly better rooting ability (mean range 70.3-75.6%) than hard wood (31.7 - 44.8%). Similarly, among media mixtures, M3 (63.7%) and M4 (62.8) showed significantly better rooting of cuttings than M1, M2 and M5 (44.3 - 54.6%). On the other hand, when treatment combinations were compared, M3C1, i.e. top soil + sand + manure in 2:21 ratio (M3) plus soft wood single node cuttings with one pair of leaves (CI) showed the highest average performance of 89.2% rooting ability and 60.3% survival rate at last hardening off stage and was the best treatment. The result of this study supported the good potential of cuttings for multiplication of coffee hybrids.
